LongHairedPoet Election Response

Last week the great country of the United States reelected President Barack Obama. The man who has been called a Socialist, a Marxist, a Communist, an Atheist, a Muslim and many more things that have taken up reams of paper since at least 2007 and now. I want to try to respond to this election in a civilized manner. I, of course supported Buddy Roemer in the 2012 Republican Primary and Jill Stein of the Green Party in the general election, so if this is your first time to my blog, then this may help you to understand my biases.

(Before I go any further, if at any point during this post you feel upset or overwhelmed, please feel free to skip to the bottom. With love – LHP)

First of all, I have addressed this before, Obama campaigned as a “Dove” (as is the thing that good Democrats do):

So, even though I wasn’t old enough to vote in 2008, I feel that any and all doves who voted for Obama in 2008 (and probably in 2012, when I voted for Jill Stein) were (are) being cheated and lied to. As you can see below, while Obama may have pulled boots off the ground, he is still perpetuating war and violence:

Obama, America’s Assassin-in-Chief

Secret ‘Kill List’ Proves a Test of Obama’s Principles and Will

Now, I’m sure I’m being the traditional cynic, all of my regular readers should be used to this, but I continue to be cynical. I heard the argument during the election that the reason DOMA (Defense Against Marriage Act) can’t be repealed and ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act) can’t be put in place is because of the Republicans in the House and that Obama couldn’t use Executive Orders on such things. Let’s look at a list of things that Obama could, by definition that he did and got away with it, use Executive Orders for:

Establishing the White House Homeland Security Partnership Council

Executive Order from the President regarding Authorizing the Implementation of Certain Sanctions Set Forth in the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 and Additional Sanctions with respect to Iran

Order Signed by the President regarding the Acquisition of Four U.S. Wind Farm Project Companies by Ralls Corporation

Executive Order–Russian Highly Enriched Uranium

Executive Order — Instituting a National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security

Executive Order 13532 — Promoting Excellence, Innovation, and Sustainability at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

While some of these things are good, if not great (such as promoting Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Instituting a National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security), some are questionable, such as the Homeland Security Partnership Council and at any rate, the Executive Order, at least under the newly reelected President, is used for vast amounts of things. Following this logic, if the president stood for gay marriage, if he stood for gay rights, if he stood for the rights of the entire LGBT* community, then he would be perfectly within his ability to write an Executive Order in favor of things like repealing DOMA and implementing ENDA.

Then again, one might be able to tie Obama’s reluctance to repeal DOMA to political motive. How could anyone go against their best campaigner?

Again, Obama went for Dodd-Frank over reimplementing Glass-Steagall and again I’m told in debate this is due to the House and Senate, it has to do with the late Ted Kennedy’s passing, the way Al Franken caucused and the stampede of Tea Party politicians brought fresh-faced to Washington in 2010. I am told that Obama is compromising and that this is something Obama supporters are glad to see in their president.

I look at The Affordable Care Act, I look at the Executive Orders, I look at the kind of people who gave money to Obama in 2008 and 2012 and who he allowed to sit beside him in the White House and I find it hard to believe that he fought hard for a Glass-Steagall reinstatement over a Dodd-Frank lax-on-the-banks kind of ‘regulation.’

I think what we see here is that Bill Clinton is the new standard-bearer of the Democratic party, and Obama is his greatest protege (sorry Hillary), and this is one of the reasons Obama could not reinstate Glass-Steagall, he had to go along with Bill Clinton.

I wanted to wrap up this part of this blog with “Obama’s record speaks for itself” but it doesn’t really do this. We still don’t know all of the details about ACA, and what real effects they will have once they are implemented, nor are any Executive Orders pored over like poll numbers are, so instead I have to say, “The mainstream media speaks for Obama, and so we aren’t sure what Obama or his record really stand for.”

So, my response to this election? Well I’m not pleased with it but I’m not going to say it is the end of the world, and I’m not in any financial situation to move to foreign countries, even if I wanted to, so instead I’ll just say this, somewhere between playing in my parents front yard, fighting imaginary wars for the greater good, and growing up and going to college I read a book called Ishmael and started listening to something called Punk Rock, and in doing these things, I developed not only a sense to do well by the world I live in, but also a sense to question everything, and that’s what I intend to do. Take the information above as you will, maybe I have put it through my own spin to make it look the way I want it to look, maybe I’m cynical and/or paranoid, maybe I just need a new hobby, at any rate…

You can Google the lyrics if you’d like, but I’ll admit this doesn’t best represent Anarchy in a economic socio-political manner, but it is catchy, and it does make the point, I think that maybe Anarchy – small level co-ops, communes and collectives – may be the only way, at least in my personal opinion.

With that being said, let’s listen to some other music I think is important post-election in America:

Now, I don’t have a religion, organized or not, and while I believe that everyone has a right to their religion, as long as it doesn’t harm others, I do not believe that religion and government mix, this is just my personal opinion, I don’t believe that a good statesperson HAS to be religious or spiritual, as I don’t think a good student HAS to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t want to see the state become the new monotheism.

Lastly, a little something that inspires me everyday as a no-name aspiring journalist:

Remember these things if nothing else: Life is short, so laugh a lot, love a lot, cry a lot, do the things that make you happy and share your happiness with those around you. Love yourself and try not to let the bull weigh you down.

The Long-Haired Poet

Growing Our Movement

With the election on Tuesday, momentum is building for the Stein/Honkala campaign just when we need it!

Please join me in supporting the campaign’s final outreach efforts.

There are 90 million voters disillusioned with establishment politicians, and they need to hear from us.

In addition, we need to be in a position to act FAST if there is another stolen election. Remember Florida in 2000? Ohio in 2004? I sure do…

David_Cobb_on_fire.jpg

Can you pitch in today in these final days?

But no matter what happens on election day, to get the systemic change that we so richly deserve and desperately need, we need both a broad and deep social movement and an electoral arm that represents that movement.

We have a social movement now — people everywhere are engaging through Occupy, anti-war demonstrations, Medicare for all, environmental efforts and much more. Teachers in Chicago are standing up for public education and going back to work with winning contracts. Walmart workers are standing up and fighting for their rights.

We must keeping building — please dig deep. These last days are our most important yet.

The Green party is poised to be the electoral arm fighting alongside activists across the county. But candidates can’t do this alone. Only together will we rebuild our democracy

Will you join us? Anything you can give will make a difference.

Onward,

~ David Cobb

It’s Not About Us

I am voting for Jill Stein this November for the same reason I was arrested with other Occupy demonstrators in front of Goldman Sachs. I do not want to be complicit in systems of corporate power, systems that if left unchallenged will doom the future for my children and your children.

Please join me by contributing today to Jill Stein for President.

As I recently wrote about in my endorsement of Jill Stein, it’s not about us anymore. It is all about protecting the planet for future generations. I urge you to join me in voting for a candidate who seeks to protect our eco-system and who represents the concerns of working and poor people.

We must combat the corporate state through small and large acts of defiance. We have a moral obligation to stand up and say no. By stepping outside the two party charade, by saying that we will not remain passive as the ecosystem is destroyed and the global economy reconfigured into a world of masters and serfs, we assert our independence, our dignity and ultimately our power.

Anything you can give (up to $2500) builds resistance to establishment politics.

Join us now to confront the climate crisis, the continued assault on civil liberties, the expansion of our imperial wars, the failure to regulate and prosecute the criminal behavior of Wall Street or the studied indifference to the chronic joblessness and chronic underemployment.

Together we can build a wide front to push back against corporate power and reject the political mandarins in each party who betray the citizenry to serve corporate interests.

Please give your money, your time and your vote to this campaign. And once the election is over, join us in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience.

Yours,

Chris Hedges

Two Important Words

I have to say it —

Climate change is affecting our daily lives. And dangerous weather like Hurricane Sandy, the latest frankenstorm, is deeply connected to unchecked human influence.

Neither establishment candidate even mentioned the words “climate” and “change” during their presidential debates, yet rapid and dangerous weather patterns are affecting nearly 1 in 5 Americans tonight. Our climate crisis is worsening and immediate action must be taken.

Can you pitch in $5 today to fight for a greener America?

Midnight tonight is our deadline for raising the last $12,000 out of $75,000 to needed to make our last media buy before Nov. 6. Join us in sending the message that climate change is the greatest threat to our global health and prosperity. Without serious leadership on this issue, only more violent storms are on the horizon.

Don’t wait any longer — anything you can give (up to $2500) makes a big difference in these final days.

And a big difference is exactly what this country needs.

I’m inspired by the support we’ve received from all around the world. Thank you.

Ralph Nader the moderator – Patrick Gavin – POLITICO.com

The man who’s come to symbolize third parties over the past decade — Ralph Nader — is going to moderate a debate between this cycle’s candidates following in his footsteps.

Nader, a former Green Party candidate who is not running for the White House this time around, will moderate a debate on Nov. 4 between Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode and Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson.

Social media toolkit

Social Media Toolkit

The buzz is building, but we need all hands on deck to really break through the noise in the coming days. If you’re reading this, you know how important social media is and we hope you’ll follow the recommendations below to help with the campaign’s visibility and make sure the people’s voice is heard in 2012!

(Note: This is an extremely condensed guide to using social media for campaign advocacy. The tactics and opportunities available at your fingertips are uncountable and increasing daily. We encourage you to refer to the resources we recommend below and experiment until you find what works for you and your online network.)

1. Make sure you’re connected to us!

○      Facebook http://www.facebook.com/drjillstein

○      Twitter http://twitter.com/jillstein2012

○      YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/JillStein2012?feature=watch

○      Google + https://plus.google.com/109196677270230251313/posts

2. Support key messages.

Green New Deal. Green New Deal. Green New Deal. Talk about any and every bit of this emergency four part program of specific solutions for moving America quickly out of crisis into the secure green future. Copy and paste bits of it into social media status updates, use the PDF image on our site as a graphic, and encourage people to learn more about the Green New Deal.

  • The US is in crisis. It’s time to transition to a new #green economy. It’s time for a #GreenNewDeal. http://bit.ly/PtTrhv
  • The #GreenNewDeal will make the US sustainable, healthy & just. Is that a future you’d like? http://bit.ly/PtTrhv PLS RT
  • A #GreenNewDeal will restore our democracy by ending corporate personhood. http://bit.ly/PtTrhv Like? PLS RT
  • Everyone willing & able to work has the right to a job at a living wage. We need the #GreenNewDeal http://bit.ly/PtTrhv

Here are other messages that have been working well:

  • Help your followers find the candidates that truly reflect their values! Share the quiz! http://www.isidewith.com/ PLS RT
  • Make your vote count: #VoteGreen http://bit.ly/PtTrhv
  • Stand and be counted, be seen, #VoteGreen http://bit.ly/PtTrhv
  • The 2 party system is not serving the 99%. Let’s make history & get a new party in the #Whitehouse. #VoteGreen #OWS PLS RT
  • “The politics of fear has brought us everything we were afraid of.” @JillStein2012 #VoteGreen #VoteYourValues
  • “To vote for either Wall-Street-backed candidate, that is the definition of throwing away your vote.” @JillStein2012 #VoteGreen
  • MUST SEE! Why you don’t even know that a #Presidential candidate was arrested recently ow.ly/ez0Nc #Occupy PLS RT
  • Choosing the lesser of two evils keeps things exactly as they are. #VoteYourValues #VoteGreen @JillStein2012

3. Follow best practices.

  • Post photos and video content often. Check out our YouTube and Facebook pages for multimedia to share.
  • Tag users whenever appropriate. Likewise, use hashtags (but, not too many).
  • Keep it brief. Twitter only allows 140 characters, try to not go much longer on other platforms. Videos are typically best if they’re 1-3 minutes. Blog posts are best at 300-600 words. People have extremely short attention spans these days, so get to the point as quickly as possible.
  • Be human. It’s called social media because it’s supposed to be social. Be conversational, ask questions, respond to comments – act like you’re in a room with these people.
  • Include a Call-to-Action. Ask a question, urge liking, sharing, re-tweeting. If it’s relevant, include a hyperlink (shorten using a service like bitly).

4. Seek out new allies.

If you already 100,000 followers on Twitter, kudos! But, for most of us, we need to constantly seek out new allies and build our networks. Don’t expect them to find you, you need to find them. How? Here are a few ideas:

  • Do keyword searches. For example: “progressive online influencers,” “best green twitter accounts,” etc.
  • Look at who’s following people you follow and who they follow. Did that make sense? Essentially, it’s examining existing networks to find allies of allies.
  • Search relevant hashtags to see who’s using them.
  • Find relevant bloggers, comment on their posts, and connect with them on social media.

5. Write great content.

Whether it’s a 100 character tweet or a 500 word blog, make every letter count. Try to be clever, persuasive, positive, inspiring, anything to stand out (within respectful reason). Also, watch your grammar and spelling.

6. Integrate Channels and Communications.

To be most effective, social media should be a part of all communications. Prepped tweets in emails and blog posts; links to profile pages in email signatures; URLs on brochures and fliers. Remind people every chance you get that they should join you online.

7. Organize.

Once you’ve made a lot of connections, organize! The number of ways you can come together as a collective force for good – both online and offline – are endless. Identify a goal (raise awareness, gather signatures, raise money, etc), create a strategy for reaching it, delegate tasks to interested allies, execute, celebrate your success. Clearly, there’s a lot more involved in organizing using social media, so we encourage you to use the resources below to learn more.

Good luck and thanks for your help!

$16,000 by Midnight

This is it.

We’re almost there. We must raise $16,000 by midnight tonight to hit our goal of raising $75,000 to make our last media buy before Nov. 6th.

Please don’t wait any longer. Contribute today.

This crucial media buy will help us build demand for the Green New Deal. A win of 1% of the vote puts us firmly back on the political map. Winning 3% makes history. And 5% immediately unleashes $20 million in clean public funding for our 2016 presidential bid.

 new135.jpg

Can you chip in right now?

We must show the 90 million voters who plan on staying home on election night that there is a candidate standing for majority values. There is too much at stake — we need a Full Employment Program, a halt to drone strikes and bloated military spending, and an end to the war on working and poor people.

Supporters like you have pitched in all across the country to get us this far, but with only 8 days left to the campaign, we need you now more than ever.

Thank you for your support.
