Punk

Born out of a hatred for the bloated mainstream record label owned bands and a love for beatnik poetry, Punk ripped through it’s youth scaring people and doing drugs before it grew up into Hardcore. Hardcore punk was faster, and in some cases (i.e Greg Ginn) more technical. Some Hardcore bands or musicians advocated a straight edge (drug & alcohol free) lifestyle (See: D.C. Scene).

After ripping through the 80s with all the political and emotional fervor it could muster, Hardcore and Punk sputtered into the 90s where it was soon gobbled up by record companies.

Though in the mainstream Punk has been poisoned by bands like Green Day and Blink-182, and by ideas that pop stars like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus can have a ‘punk look,’ Punk still survives and that will be showcased here.
